The "Century" team of T20 World Cups !!

The ICC men’s T20 world cup is underway in Australia and the tournament has given the viewers some cray moments as one would expect from the high-octane tournament featuring the best of the best cricket teams.  The 20 over a side format of the game has added the much-needed pace and thrill to the game and the players have accustomed themselves to suit this modern form.
Imagining a player to hit a century (100 runs) in a 20 over game is legendary for sure. The century feat is exclusive in Tests (5 days) and ODI’s (50 overs a side) however it’s much more extraordinary in the T20 format as the entire team gets 120 deliveries to play. Thus, it made me inquisitive to explore this area to see how many times it has been accomplished in the T20 world cups so far. Turns we have a perfect 11 people to have done it so far making it a team of sorts.
Here is the list of the squad members from the "Century" team:

 #1 Chris Gayle  (West Indies)

117 runs of 57 deliveries (7 fours, 10 sixes, strike rate 205.26)

Match 1,  South Africa vs West Indies

2007 T20 World Cup , Wanderers Stadium, South Africa

We all vividly remember how Brendan Mccullum blasted the inaugural match of the IPL with a score of 158, the same was matched in the first official T20 match of the inaugural T20 world cup. Hailed as the “Universe Boss" , Chris Gayle set up the fireworks after South Africa won the toss and opted to field. All thanks to Gayle’s single handed effort West Indies were 145/0 in 13 overs. Gayle completed his century in the 14th over and was the first centurion in the format.
West Indies posted a mammoth total of 205/6 in the allotted 20 overs, however the T20 world cup was indeed a revolution of sorts. Guess what South Africa chased the total down in 17.4  overs with 8 wickets to spare. Herschelle Gibbs made 90, but it was Chris Gayle who had a personal milestone.

#2 Suresh Raina (India)

101 runs of 60 deliveries (9 fours, 5 sixes, strike rate 168.33)

Match 5, India vs South Africa

2010 T20 World Cup, Gros Islet, West Indies

Second instance of a T20 world cup century and already we have two similarities from the first one – i) opponent being South Africa, ii) toss won by South Africa and elected to field. South Africa were dominant with their bowling and sent Indian opener Murali Vijay with the very second ball of the innings bringing in Suresh Raina on the third ball of the match with India reeling at 4/1.Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh stitched a good partnership to steady India to 111/2 in 15 overs with Raina reaching 50 from 42 deliveries.
Last five overs yielded 75 runs with Raina quashing next 51 runs of 18 deliveries bringing up his century on the third delivery of 19th over. India scored 186/5 in their innings and were successful in limiting South Africa to 172/5 (this was third similarity which was avoided from Gayle's ton).

#3 Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka)

100 runs of 64 deliveries (10 fours, 4 sixes, strike rate 156.25)

Match 7, Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe

2010 T20 World Cup, Providence Stadium, West Indies

The second century two matches later in the 2010 edition was in the match between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.  Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. Jayawardene opened the batting and started from the word “go”, smashing a four and a six on the second and third delivery of the innings going on to score 14 runs off the first over. Jayawardene proved why he was one of the greatest of all time as he held one side of the innings with stability, measured aggression and had solidified flair through the entire innings.                                   Jayawardene reached the feat on the 2nd delivery of the 18th over and was dismissed 4 balls later. Sri Lanka scored 173/7 and heavy rains stopped play in between Zimbabwe’s innings. Somehow 5 overs (required for D/L method) were completed and Sri Lanka won the match and went on to play the semi-finals before losing out to winners England.

#4 Brendon McCullum (New Zealand)

123 runs of 58 deliveries (11 fours, 7 sixes, strike rate 212.06)

Match 5 , New Zealand vs Bangladesh

2012 T20 World Cup, Pallekelle Int'l stadium, Sri Lanka

Sent in to bat after Bangladesh won the toss, New Zealand , the media world was swirling with the most probable shocker of the world cup. Reason being New Zealand’s modest outings recently and Bangladesh coming of age in their style of play in the conditions which favored their spin attack. Martin Guptill and J Franklin started the proceedings and New Zealand were 18/0 in their first 3.
Brendon McCullum blasted his fifty in 29 balls, with New Zealand at 100/1 in their 13th over. What conspired from there was pure class – McCullum scored his last 83 runs in 29 balls getting out in the penultimate delivery of the innings and helping New Zealand post a high end 191/3.Bangladesh crumbled in the chase and were dismissed for 132/8 in their 20 overs.

#5 Alex Hales (England)

116 runs (n.o) of 64 deliveries (11 fours, 6 sixes, strike rate 181.25)

Match 22, England vs Sri Lanka

2014 T20 World Cup, Chattogram, Bangladesh

The first centurion in T20 world cup in a chasing cause goes to Alex Hales.  England opted to field in the Asian conditions favoring Sri Lanka. The stalwarts of Sri Lanka batting Mahela Jayewardene (89 runs) and Tillakaratne Dilshan(55 runs) pushed the Sri Lankan total to a competitive 189/4. England were in all sorts of trouble with Nuwan Kulasekara removing Lumb and Moeen Ali on ducks to make the scoreboard 0/2.
Captain Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales steadied the innings with some cautious batting yet the asking rate shot up to 12.16 at the end of 14 overs , with Hales on 64 runs in 44 deliveries. The next over from Mendis was the turning point as Alex Hales belted out 6,2,6,6,4 accumulating 25 runs off the over. Hales completed his century with a flat six over cover in the 19th over before sealing the win in the 19th over with another six over leg side.

#6 Ahmed Shehzad (Pakistan)

111 not out of 62 deliveries (10 fours, 5 sixes, strike rate 179.03)

Match 27, Pakistan vs Bangladesh

2014 T20 World Cup, Mirpur, Bangladesh

Pakistan came in as the hot favorites in this fixture against the home side who were seeking some change in fortunes with their playing style. Pakistan needed to up the ante at this point and were looking to win with a good net run rate. Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat and in came Kamran Akmal with Ahmad Shehzad. Shehzad was looking classy right from the onset and Pakistan were blasting their way with 42 without loss of wicket in first 4 overs.
Some tight bowling from Bangladesh saw Pakistan being restricted to 88/3 at the end of 12 overs. The next over saw Shehzad accumulating 22 runs from the over to set up the tempo and reached his century in the 18th over remaining unbeaten. Pakistan scored 190/5 and owing to their evergreen fast bowling attack restricted Bangladesh to 140/7, winning by a handsome margin of 50 runs.

#7 Tamim Iqbal (Bangladesh)

103 runs (n.o) of 63 deliveries (10 fours, 5 sixes, strike rate 163.49)

Match 12, Bangladesh vs Oman

2016 T20 World Cup, Dharamshala, India

This match was a knockout for the both the teams in the qualifier stage. With the threat of rains looming large Bangladesh were hoping to not have a replica of their Asia cup final in which rain played a spoilsport. Oman won the toss and chose to field. Bangladesh was towards the mainstay transformation phase of their cricket and this was a perfect ploy to announce their arrival in the world cup.
After a quiet powerplay producing 29 runs without loss of wickets, Bangladesh stepped up the run flow scoring 51 runs in the last five overs. Opener Tamim Iqbal held the innings together and bought up his ton in the 19th over, remaining unbeaten till the end.
Bangladesh’s new much lethal bowling attack reduced Oman for 65/9 in 12 overs before the match being declared to Bangladesh via Duckworth Lewis (D/L) method as rain intervened,

#8 Chris Gayle (West Indies)

100 runs (n.o) of 48 deliveries (5 fours, 11 sixes, strike rate 208.33)

Match 15, West Indies vs England

2016 T20 World Cup, Wankhede Stadium, India

England had found their aggressive rhythm coming into the T20 world cup and were poised against the reputation holders West Indies featuring 8 of their players who won the title in 2012. West Indies elected to field and England posted a competitive 182/6 in their innings backed by scores from their batting order. England had a formidable bowling attack and sent opener Johnson Charles back on the third delivery of West Indian innings.
At the end of over 8 , West Indies were 67/2 with an asking rate touching 10, prime reason was Chris Gayle had just faced 16 deliveries with a score of 22. Next 32 balls he scored 78 runs and carried his bat through the chase bringing his century on the first ball of 18th over and the win in the 19.1 overs. This century is the fastest in T20 World cups. Gayle is only person having  two centuries in T20 world cups.

#9 Jos Buttler (England)

101 runs (n.o) of 67 deliveries (6 fours, 6 sixes, strike rate 150.74)

Match 29, England vs Sri Lanka

2021 T20 World Cup, Sharjah Stadium, UAE

The Covid derailed the T20 world cup stated in 2020 and it was held in UAE in 2021. Teams were coming off from a halt. Jos Buttler showed some amazing composure in IPL just before T20 World cup (also in UAE) with 4 centuries. Jos Butler continued his class into the world cup and scored another against Sri Lanka etching his name in the record books.
Putting into bat England started poorly losing 3 wickets for 36 runs in the powerplay. Jos Buttler in fact scored the slowest 50 off 45 balls by an Englishmen in T20. However as seen through his late career Buttler propelled the latter half ably getting to his ton in the final ball of the innings and scoring his last 50 in 22 deliveries. England were able to set a target of 164 , before rooting out Sri Lanka with their disciplined bowling to 137 and winning the match.

#10 Rilee Rossouw (South Africa)

109 runs of 56 deliveries (7 fours, 8 sixes, strike rate 194.64)

Match 22, South Africa vs Bangladesh

2022 T20 World Cup, Sydney, Australia

Rain is poised to play a big spoilsport in the ongoing tournament and eventually the net run rate is going to be crucial. South Africa had their first match washed off with Zimbabwe and were looking for a comprehensive win to stay afloat in the group stage comprising tougher sides like India, Pakistan and an emerging Zimbabwe who have caused the big upset of the tournament.
South Africa opted to bat first and lost their captain in the first over. Riley Rossouw joined Quinton de Kock and reached his 50 of 30 balls. Rossouw scored 50 of the next 22 balls bringing up his century in the 17th over. He was out for 107 putting South Africa into a commendable total of 205/5. The express pace attack of South Africa on Australian pitches proved too much for Bangladesh who crumbled in the chase and ended on 101 losing out by 104 runs.

#11 Glenn Phillips (New Zealand)

104 runs of 64 deliveries (10 fours, 4 sixes, strike rate 162.50)

Match 27, New Zealand vs Sri Lanka

2022 T20 World Cup, Sydney, Australia

New Zealand were the finalists of last T20 world cup in UA. Ecstatic after a humongous win in their opening encounter with champions Australia, New Zealand came in to the match looking to virtually seal their spot for the next round of the tournament. The opposition Sri Lanka were heavy on their heels having just won their Asia cup final and looking to make an impact.
New Zealand elected to bat first and were shattered In the powerplay by Sri Lanka’s tactical bowling unit reducing to 25/3 in the powerplay. Glen Phillips got a lifeline when his catch was dropped in the 7th over. Amidst falling wickets Phillips held the inning on his own and scored his century in the 19th over amassing team total to 167/7. Sri Lanka could only manage 102 runs in the chase and were outdone by some incredible bowling from Trent Boult and company.

And that was the list guys, last world cup's champion Australia have no players to score a century in a T20 world cup. Hopefully we will have many more in this team of centurions from T20 world cups.

Thank you for all the support. Let me know about some interesting topics.
Cheers!!
